A Market-Oriented Approach for Multiple Objective Optimization in Agro-Ecological Land Use Planning AgEcon
Agrell, Per J..
The development of a third world country requires a conscious balance between different planning and policy issues, such as population growth rate, gross national income, self reliance and long-term sustainable ecological development. This paper reports on a cross-disciplinary project to design a decision support system (DSS) that aims to assist government policy makers in planning the regional agricultural development of the Bungoma region in Kenya. Contrary to previous research, which has taken the perspective of a central planner and a static market, this model extends the scope by introducing the market mechanisms and price subsidies. The model is based on the Agro-Ecological Zones (AEZ) model, a previously developed non-interactive optimization...

Decision making support system for the adaptation and coexistence of extensive livestock farming in the dynamics of pantanal floods and droughts in face of climate change. Infoteca-e
PADOVANI, C. R.; ARAÚJO, A. F. de; ISHII, R. P.; MATSUBARA, E. T.; ESQUERDO, J. C. D. M.; ANTONIASSI, R. A. dos S..
The Pantanal is an extensive sedimentary plain, with seasonal flooding and where extensive livestock farming is the main economic activity. Flood seasonality is a natural process in wetlands, it naturally fertilizes native pastures that occur in large areas in the Pantanal, being the basis of cattle feed. In regions that flood by overflowing rivers or those that flood directly because of rain, large areas of native pasture are submerged from time to time with critical depths and durations, and in extreme events, there may be a drastic reduction in the supply of food and even an increase of cattle mortality due to starvation or drowning. Over more than 200 years of coexisting with floods, management strategies such as the removal of cattle from low,...

Elicitation of Subjective Crop Yield PDF for DSS Implementation AgEcon
Clop-Gallart, M. Merce; Juarez-Rubio, Francisco.
The aim of this research is to establish the persistence of annual crop yield point values subjective estimates, and the coherence and reliability of subjective crop yield probability density functions (PDF) elicited from a series of interviews carried out on a wide group of farmers, and then to determine whether they should be included or not in a decision support system (DSS). Three different elicitation techniques were used: a) The Two Step PDF estimation method b) Triangular distribution c) Beta distribution Although the results are noteworthy, further studies should be carried out to perfect the aforementioned techniques before crop yield PDF's are used in decision making processes.

Multiatr: a tool for ranking of pairwise alternatives. Infoteca-e
LOBO, R. N. B..
The decision-making process is complex and often demands time and difficulties for managers, project coordinators and, especially here, specialists in genetic improvement programs. Tools that can help this process are always welcome and are added to other alternatives for a correct and efficient decision. Despite the possibility of being used in several areas of knowledge, the MultiAtr software was specially developed for the definition of weights for the selection objectives of animal breeding programs. Its use in interviews with specialists, breeders and scholars can contribute to the direction of these programs by the scientists involved in this decision. Based on this, it is recommended, for the scientific community and other decision-making actors,...

POSSIBILITIES FOR ECOHYDROLOGICAL MONITORING IN NATURAL AND MANAGED ECOSYSTEMS IN SOUTHERN CHILE Gayana Botánica
Peters,Jan; Wieme,Vanessa; Boeckx,Pascal; Samson,Roeland; Godoy,Roberto; Oyarzún,Carlos; Verhoest,Niko.
Ecohydrology investigates how hydrological processes affect plant growth and vice versa. As these mutual interactions are important in many ecosystems, ecohydrology has wide applicability. An important aspect of ecohydrological research is the assessment and prediction of the occurrence of plant species or vegetation types in relation to hydrological or hydrogeochemical habitat conditions. Several models have been developed (e.g. DEMNAT, ICHORS, ITORS, ITORS-VL). All of these models are data driven. Consequently a monitoring network has to be installed, possibly in addition to existing databases. These networks are ecosystem specific but the most widely monitored variables are: water table depth, electric conductivity of groundwater, soil moisture content...

Role of automation agents in agribusiness decision support systems Agrociencia
Pavlovic,Martin; Koumboulis,Fotis N.; Tzamtzi,Maria P.; Rozman,Crtomir.
Various automation agents can be embedded in a modern Decision Support System in agriculture, based on the following design approaches: E-Learning Agent, Monitoring Agent, Fault Diagnosis Agent, Weather Information Agent, E-Commerce Agent and Logistics Agent. The proposed Agents contribute to farmers' education, to timely correct fault diagnosis and the incorporation of modern agricultural techniques. Moreover, they allow processing historical data, while taking into account several factors in order to support decision making. The preliminary Automation Agents for Decision Support Systems (AADSS) model idea may be applied to various agribusiness activities on international level. Moreover, an operator agent is proposed, that exploits technological and...

Sgrmate: for maximizing genetic gain and controlling inbreeding. Infoteca-e
LOBO, R. N. B..
Genetic evaluations in animal breeding are essential for identifying superior individuals, who can be selected to compose the next generation. The indication of sires and dams of proven genetic value improves the efficiency of production systems. On the other hand, the use of few animals in the selection process can increase the inbreeding of the herds, which can reduce the animals’ vigor and reduce future genetic variability. Additionally, with the availability of genetic value from several animals, the decision of how to combine these parents for the possibility of greater genetic gain is not such a simple task. Imagine having to combine 20 sires with 300 dams, who should be mated with whom? The availability of a tool to carry out this work has a great...

Sistema de suporte à decisão para a adaptação e convivência da pecuária extensiva à dinâmica das inundações e estiagens do Pantanal frente às mudanças climáticas. Infoteca-e
